What is EPS?
What is EPS (Expanded Polystyrene Rigid Foam) ?
EPS (Expanded Polystyrene Rigid Foam) is typically white colored thermoplastic material with closed pore in foam state obtained from petroleum with polymerization of styrene monomer. EPS is a material used in heat and sound insulation. Polystyrene is exposed to preliminary heading after polystyrene is supplied as raw material in small particles. Heading gas used for obtaining foam and heading particles is Pentane within EPS products acquired with heading and inter-cohesion of polystyrene particles. Being an organic component, Pentane displaces with air in very short time during and following production after ensuring creation of small pores in very little number within polystyrene particles; required condensation of material is ensured in this phase. (Afterwards, expanded particles rested in special silos are ensured to combine with one another with the help of water vapor within molds and to gain properties of material. A continuous mass that polygons combined with one another without any clearance in between is formed in honey comb appearance as a result of combination of particles with one another. Following production steps vary according to availability of packaging material or intended for heat insulation and use site of material.) Released Pentane gas is converted into CO2 available in atmosphere and H20 water vapor. With the release of Pentane, still air within little closed porous cells in great number available within the body of material (3-6 billions in 1m3 EPS depending on condensation) is locked up. When these particles magnified with pentane gas with high mechanical pentane gas displaces with air, they elude outwardly and form EPS blocks in molds. 98 % of material is still air and 2 % of material is polystyrene. Density refers composition of raw material with how many kg of 1 meter cube EPS material.
As known, still air is the most economical and environment-friendly and perfect heat insulation material. High heat insulating properties of EPS is because of still air which it incorporates within the body of particles in large number. One of the few materials ensuring the best heat insulation available throughout the world, EPS is the only material providing the same performance more economically than the other insulating materials used. As density of EPS increases, the rate of heat insulation increases. It complies with the norms of TS 7316 EN 13163 and TS 825
